l'Est dans l'ouest (translated to "the East in the West") was conceived in France in 2010 as a musical project attempting to fuse Western and Oriental musical styles. It is the meeting of two instruments each with its cultural background; the piano representing Western music and the Arabic oud representing Oriental music.
Most importantly, it was the meeting of two musicians from diverse backgrounds; pianist and composer Jonas Müller representing Western Music (classical and jazz) and Algerian born Rabah Hamrene representing Oriental music.
What became clear over time was, that with these two particular musicians the name "l'Est dans l'ouest" (East in the West) became more or less misleading and it would have been more appropriate to call it "le nord dans le sud" (the North in the South). Jonas, with his Danish ancestry, has a distinct Scandinavian background, which you hear in even some of his most oriental-influenced compositions and Rabah, being Algerian of Kabyle ancestry has a much stronger foundation in Western Mediterranean Andalusian traditions as opposed to purely Middle Eastern styles.
That said, the duo, through its compositions and playing manages to incorporate the best of both the Eastern and the Western worlds while also adding a very strong Mediterranean and North African flavor to it. The duo has worked with many talented guests including the cellist Leonore Grollemund, Syrian oudist Somar Al Nasser, Mandolinist Rémi Cortial and percussionist Yacine Sbay and has performed and recorded in France, Denmark, Germany and Algeria.
l'Est dans l'ouest a été conçu en 2010 en France comme un projet musical tentant de fusionner les styles musicaux occidentaux et orientaux. C'est la rencontre de deux instruments ayant chacun son bagage culturel ; le piano représentant la musique occidentale et le oud arabe représentant la musique orientale.
Ce fut surtout la rencontre de deux musiciens d'horizons divers ; le pianiste et compositeur Jonas Müller représentant la musique occidentale (classique et jazz) et Rabah Hamrene d'origine algérienne représentant la musique orientale.
Ce qui est devenu clair au fil du temps, c'est qu'avec ces deux musiciens particuliers, le nom "l'Est dans l'ouest" est devenu plus ou moins trompeur et il aurait été plus approprié de l'appeler "le nord dans le sud". Jonas, avec son ascendance danoise, a une origine scandinave distincte, que vous entendez même dans certaines de ses compositions les plus influencées par l'orient et Rabah, étant algérien d'ascendance kabyle, a une base beaucoup plus solide dans les traditions andalouses de la Méditerranée occidentale plus que les traditions purement moyen-orientales.
Cela dit, le duo, à travers ses compositions et son jeu, parvient à incorporer le meilleur des mondes oriental et occidental tout en y ajoutant une très forte saveur méditerranéenne et nord-africaine. Le duo a travaillé avec des nombreux invités talentueux dont la violoncelliste Leonore Grollemund, le oudiste syrien Somar Al Nasser, le mandoliniste Rémi Cortial et le percussionniste Yacine Sbay et a joué et enregistré en France, au Danemark, en Allemagne et en Algérie.
